The Tales of New Yarn City : Chapter 5 : Dark Secrets
All of a sudden the magic was gone. The tragic accident of his parents throw Mortimer back to reality. He had to reluctantly accept his legacy. Mortimer always hated the family business, but now it was up to him to take responsibility keep the family tradition going.
First, he had to get an overview! It turned out that the father's factory had passed its glory days a long time ago. The machines were outdated, everything seemed ailing and somehow eerie. Mortimer roamed the abandoned building, with his father's heavy keychain in one hand and a notepad in the other. He opened doors, counted and made a note. It went on like this for days and the numbers on the notepad became more and more bleak.
The old factory was like a labyrinth. There were dark niches, winding corridors and poorly lit rooms everywhere. Many of them hadn't been entered for decades. And, there was a widely ramified cellar vault that stretched under the building. Mortimer only dared to get in because his feet left a visible trace in the dust which would lead him the way back.
Mortimer had been going for a while, when he detected another path on the dusty floor. Someone, or something, had walked along here - often. The foot prints led deeper into the silent darkness and came to end in front of a rusty iron door. Mortimer turned the doorknob – locked, of course. Dad's keychain! With trembling fingers Mortimer searched for the right key and finally found it! The heavy door slid open almost silently and revealed a huge dimly lit hall.
Carefully Mortimer entered. There was a familiar smell in here – dust and sheep. Wooden shelves covered the walls – all filled with stacked balls of wool. At the entrance there was a desk with books and notepads on it. Mortimer recognized his father's handwriting. He went a bit deeper into the hall and only now he noticed that the room he had entered was alive! Everything was moving! Everywhere were - moths!
